Knockma Hill

Scenic Trails on the Hill of Queen Maeve 🌿

Knockma, the great Hill of Maeve is situated 8km west of Tuam. Maeve, the legendary Queen of Connacht, and Ceasair, one of the earliest colonists of Ireland, are reputed to be buried in the cairns on the summit of the hill.

Tradition as well as popular superstition, also points to Knockma as the home of fairy legend for here Finvarra, the King of the Connacht fairies, is reputed to hold his court. From the summit of Knockma may be obtained one of the grandest panoramic views in Ireland.

The Knockma Hill trails

Knockma has 3 separate trails to discover:

Knockma Hill Walk / Queen Maeve Trail (4.2km)
This is an easy to moderate looped trail within a lovely woodland setting on well maintained tracks. Popular at weekends with hikers, walkers, and lovers of nature.

Avenue Loop (2 Km)
The Avenue Loop is a bit of a misnomer as it is an out and back walk with a route leading away from Knockma Hill and then the return journey.

Finvara’s Trail (1 Km)
A route through woodland leading to a point that has geology similar to that of The Burren in North Clare, of exposed carboniferous limestone pavements with the familiar joint patterns of clints and grykes, which local legends say are the gateways to otherworlds.
